    Hear a story, tell a story! Our monthly open mic is an opportunity to tell and hear 5-7 minute true personal stories. Every month we pick a theme, you don't have to tell on the theme but it makes it more fun. Audience members welcome!

    June's theme: Breaking the Rules- A memorable transgression. Did you break the rules? Did someone else? Were you caught, or did you get away with it? Was the rule reasonable, or did bending it make sense?

    Create unique, 3D animal puppets with natural materials found on the Folk School grounds using a collage-esq technique called assemblage. Bring regional Smoky Mountain creatures, like woodpeckers, lightning bugs, copperheads, and groundhogs, to life using materials from the woods, creeks, and countryside they call home. Part sculpture, part nature observation, and part puppetry and musical performance, experiment with puppeteering and give your creations a voice using a variety of instruments. $

    PLEASE NOTE: This class is for 12-17 year olds to attend with a parent, grandparent, or guardian -- 1 youth per 1 adult. To register, you MUST purchase adult and youth spots as a pair, one youth per one adult: $670 (adult), $330 (youth), $1,000 (combined).

    Come for stories while learning to make two old-style, Native American flutes–one made from scratch with rivercane, the other of poplar. Embellish these flutes by woodburning, coloring, and inlaying stone while listening to storytelling. Learn the story of the how the Native American flute came to the People and learn to tell the story of your flute. Enjoy experiencing working with cane and finishing with song.

    An Evening of Appalachian Tales – 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 22nd. Old time music and dance. Toe-tapping songs and Appalachian storytelling. Grab a seat, sit a spell, and enjoy the view for an evening of mountain music, story, dancing and more. From moonshine to mountain laurel, trails to turnpikes, drum beat to banjos, Cherokee to shamrocks, Chunky Gal and Hanging Dog to Brasstown Bald and back again, you’ll enjoy the magic. Young and old storytellers, writers, poets, and singer/songwriters take the stage! 

    The SCRIBES ON STAGE series captures the magic of the mountains and talented area performers: playwrights, poets, writers, storytellers, singer/song writers and musicians—a wide cast of characters, both amateur and experienced. You’ll enjoy these fun, entertaining performances.

    Stage Fright - Ghost Stories at the Peacock – 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 30th. Part Casper the Ghost. Part Addams Family. Join a ghostly gathering of creepy tales, chilling stories and family-friendly fun with tricks and treats for the kids, a costume parade for all with prizes, haunting music, and a weird poem or two. Digging up spooky, spirited moments on stage. Pumpkins, scarecrows and tombstones provide a backdrop for stories, sketches, dancing, music, costumes and songs. Batty bats, creepy creatures, and screams of joy - something for everyone.
